Dutch semiconductor equipment maker ASM: Q2 new orders down by nearly half on weak demand

According to Reuters reported on July 26, the Netherlands semiconductor equipment maker ASM International (ASM) said that new orders in the second quarter decreased by nearly half, due to weak demand, and some customers' production facilities delayed.

ASM said orders fell 48 percent to 486 million euros in the second quarter. The lower order intake in the second quarter was impacted by weaker demand and, as shown in our first quarter results, due to leading-edge logic/fab rollouts, reflecting weaker end-market conditions and some delays in the readiness of new customer fabs. In addition, the lower order intake also reflects a further normalization of backlogs compared to relatively high levels in 2022 following improved supply chain conditions.
ASM said demand in the memory market continued to weaken in the second quarter and is not expected to recover for the remainder of the year. Logic/foundry orders declined in the second quarter. Despite the recent market softness, the company remains well positioned for the next node.
Looking ahead to the year, ASM noted that it expects third quarter revenue of €580 - €620 million, and its forecast for the second half of the year remains unchanged, with revenues still expected to be down 10% or more from the first half, based on current visibility and constant exchange rates. For fiscal 2023, we still expect revenue to show single-digit year-over-year growth.
