The Intel software team recently added support for an unannounced artificial intelligence (AI) acceleration chip, codenamed Hanaba "Gaudi2C," to the open-source Linux driver code. The chip has similar core features to Intel's currently shipping Gaudi2, and the new version of the chip has a PCI ID of "3" in the latest patch for Linux 6.8.
Industry speculation suggests that the Gaudi2C may be a customized version to meet U.S. export control requirements for China, similar to Intel's July 2023 launch of the Gaudi2 HL-225B SKU with reduced interconnect performance.
There is a high likelihood that Intel will launch a new AI chip that complies with export controls, similar to NVIDIA's move, in order to secure revenue in China.
Intel has continued to improve the Linux platform Gaudi, Gaudi2 support for these two chips, its chief driver developer Oded Gabbay believes that the current support situation has been "very stable". The industry believes that Intel's open source driver is competitive with NVIDIA's proprietary driver, and some companies are expected to consider adopting Intel's Gaudi series of chips in the future to replace NVIDIA's AI chips in order to get a better price/performance ratio.
In December 2023, Intel officially released the next-generation Gaudi3 chips, the computing core will use a 5nm process, and is expected to be equipped with up to 128GB HBM3e high-bandwidth memory. Officially, Gaudi3 will offer an average 21% increase in performance compared to its predecessor, a 36% increase in energy efficiency, and a significant increase in AI training capabilities. This will launch in 2024, further challenging NVIDIA's position.
