Today, according to Nikkei Asia Update, eight electronic component suppliers, including passive component laminated ceramic capacitor (MLCC) leader Murata Manufacturing Co., Nippon Electric, Kyocera, TDK, Nitto Denko, Rohm, Alps Alpine, and Solar Electric, reported their latest financial results. In the last quarter (April-June), revenue grew 2 percent quarter-on-quarter.
However, their inventories rose 17 percent to 2.73 trillion yen ($20.4 billion). Inventory turnover increased to 3.1 months from 2.7 months, up from the same quarter in 2020, when global demand collapsed as the coronavirus pandemic spread. Murata's inventory turnover increased by two weeks to 3.7 months last quarter. In general, component suppliers are now facing a slump in end-product demand. Shipments of smartphones and personal computers fell 8.7 percent and 15.3 percent, respectively, in the second quarter, according to U.S. research firm IDC. Gartner also said recently that rising inflation and rising energy and fuel costs are putting pressure on consumers' disposable income, crimping spending on gadgets such as personal computers and smartphones.
In fact, new data today showed that global semiconductor sales growth has slowed for the sixth month in a row. It is, in effect, another sign of weakness in the global economy in the face of rising interest rates and geopolitical factors. In addition, Gartner also expects global semiconductor revenue to grow 7.4% to $639.2 billion in 2022, down from 13.6% growth last year and 26.3% last year. Separately, Gartner said global semiconductor revenue will contract to $623.1 billion next year. In the face of objective circumstances. "We now expect demand for smartphone components to fall by 10 per cent from our forecast at the beginning of the fiscal year," said Masamu Minami, Murata's executive vice-president. The same is true for Taiwan, China, which plays an important role in the global semiconductor industry chain, and the regional data also reveal some clues. Semiconductor production activity in Taiwan contracted in June and July, according to new data, with exports falling at an unprecedented rate as demand slumped.
