January 3, according to foreign media reports, rumors say TSMC's third factory in Japan may be located in Yokohama or Osaka.
In November 2023, people familiar with the matter revealed that TSMC is considering building a third factory in Japan to produce advanced 3-nanometer chips. As for the location of the third factory, rumors suggest that both Yokohama and Osaka could be the site of the plant. Sources in the supply chain have revealed that TSMC has design centers in both Osaka and Yokohama, and that Osaka is TSMC's preferred location for a third factory in Japan. TSMC said it is actively evaluating suitable construction sites and is not ruling out any possibilities.

Currently, TSMC is building a wafer fab in Kumamoto, Japan. Sources said the factory will hold its opening ceremony in February 2024, and may start trial production as early as April 2024, and will begin commercial production in the fourth quarter of 2024. After the completion of the factory, it will use 22nm, 28nm, 12nm and 16nm processes to foundry wafers for relevant customers.
At the end of December 2023, foreign media reported that initially, most of the factory's capacity will be used to foundry for Sony, and the remaining capacity will be used to foundry for automotive parts maker Denso. In addition to this plant, TSMC is also coordinating the construction of a second wafer fab near Kikuyo-machi, Kumamoto Prefecture, Japan, which is expected to have a total investment of more than 1 trillion yen, and may be the same size or larger than the first one, possibly using a more advanced 5-10 nm manufacturing process.
In July 2023, foreign media had reported that the company was planning to build a second fab in Kumamoto Prefecture, Japan, from April 2024 onwards.
