STMicroelectronics (ST), one of the world's leading semiconductor companies serving multiple electronics applications, recently announced a new microcontroller (MCU) that combines wireless silicon design expertise with the high-performance, energy-efficient STM32 system architecture. New energy-saving features extend the battery life of this wireless MCU to more than 15 years.

Particularly useful in applications deployed over long distances, including energy metering, monitoring devices, alarm systems, actuators, and sensors in smart buildings, smart factories and smart cities, the STM32WL3 wireless MCU's help to control power consumption and prioritize work. These energy-efficient MCUs improve the user experience, deliver services and reduce the environmental footprint. By using wireless MCUs from STMicroelectronics, device and application designers can quickly develop new products and gain maximum economic benefits.
The STM32WL3 is the latest innovation in ST's family of highly integrated wireless chips, with a built-in advanced energy-efficient, multi-protocol RF transceiver that uses the worldwide license-free Industrial, Scientific and Medical (ISM) dedicated radio bands for long-distance communication. In addition to the main RF transceiver, the new microcontroller integrates an ultra-low power RF transceiver that is unique in the industry. During continuous listening for wake-up signals, the system can turn off this sub-RF transceiver to save power.
Prospective customers are increasing the product value of smart connected devices with the STM32WL3 MCUs, for example, Lierda IoT Technologies is using the STM32WL33 to reduce power consumption and add remote wireless connectivity to existing networking products.Lierda modules utilize the MCU's wake-up RF capability to minimize system power consumption to monitor and maintain point-to-point or point-to-multipoint connected wirelessly connected network devices.
Another customer, Silent Smart Technology, has developed a series of sub-1GHz wireless communication modules based on the STM32WL3 wireless MCU. These modules support multiple transmission modes, channel monitoring, wireless relaying, etc. The MCU's wake-up function allows the modules to enter a deep sleep mode with an operating current of only about 1µA, while remaining in a ready state, ready to resume normal operation at any time.
ST's new STM32WL3 multifunctional long-range wireless microcontrollers help customers such as Lierda and Silent Smart to develop innovative, flexible products that dramatically reduce power consumption and time-to-market," said Benoit Rodriguez, general manager of ST's wireless business line. Utilizing special features such as wake-up RF transceivers and flow metering LC sense controllers, developers are able to design energy-efficient connectivity features for smart metering, smart agriculture and asset tracking products that can last up to 15 years on a small capacity battery."
STMicroelectronics continues to expand its family of products that integrate wireless communications with host application controllers, and the STM32WL3 is the latest addition to this product family to overcome engineering challenges, reduce power consumption and size, and improve reliability.
