Reuters release news that a person familiar with the matter revealed that Tesla's Shanghai factory has begun production of a batch of Model Y sold to Canada, the first time Tesla exported a complete vehicle from China to North America. The move also means that Tesla will connect its largest and most efficient factory in the world with its largest consumer market in North America.
Tesla has not yet responded to the latest news that a new version of the Model Y will be built in Canada at its Shanghai plant.
Previously, Tesla posted on its website that it will offer a new, lower-priced version of the Model Y in Canada, a rear-wheel-drive SUV crossover that costs $10,000 CAD (about $50,890 RMB) less than the long-range version currently sold in the Canadian market. Tesla's website shows that Canadian customers will be able to receive the new Model Y from May to July, and information on the Canadian government's website shows that consumers are eligible for a $5,000 subsidy if they purchase the new Model Y. The report said Tesla's Shanghai plant plans to produce nearly 9,000 units of the model's vehicles this quarter for sale to the North American market.
Reuters reported last November that Tesla was considering plans to export Chinese-made cars to North America. In response, Tesla CEO Elon Musk denied it on Twitter, without further detail. Last week, Musk told analysts that Tesla's Shanghai plant had the "lowest cost structure" compared to any other factory, and that it exported more than 271,000 Model Y and Model 3 cars to Europe and other markets in 2022, accounting for about 1 in 5 global sales.
Reuters reports that Tesla is not the only multinational car company exporting electric vehicles from China. Re nault's Dacia brand exported the new electric Spring to Europe; BMW also exported the iX3 electric car from China to Southeast Asia and Europe. Total Chinese car exports are set to grow significantly between 2020 and 2022. If the growth rate in the first quarter can be maintained, total Chinese car exports will continue to break through this year.
