Intel: dozens of PC makers to use new Meteor Lake AI chip

Intel says dozens of personal computer (PC) makers are using its latest artificial intelligence (AI) chip as the company and its customers try to entice consumers to upgrade their devices for a new era of chatbots.
At a news conference in New York, Intel said the new product will be used in laptops from Dell, Microsoft, Lenovo and others, which will be available soon. Intel's central processing unit (CPU) has long been the brain of most personal computers. But the new chip, codenamed "Meteor Lake," is Intel's first to include a neural processing unit (NPU), a part of the chip dedicated to artificial intelligence tasks. Intel's pitch to consumers and businesses comes as the company struggles to shake off a post-epidemic slump in personal computers, with little demand from buyers who upgraded their devices and worked from home in 2020 to buy new ones again. Intel CEO Pat Kissinger said at the event that Intel believes using its chips will make AI services cheaper, faster and more private than using cloud-based data centers. Previously, in a demonstration of the new chips this September, that Intel showed some examples of AI work that it hopes will spark interest, such as transcribing voice notes without sending data to a third-party cloud provider, or producing songs in the style of pop star Taylor Swift.
