Qorvo® Introduces Industry's First 20-Cell Smart Battery Management Single Chip Solution

        Qorvo®, a leading global provider of connectivity and power solutions, today announced that it has further expanded its power management portfolio with the introduction of new Power Application Controller® (PAC) devices, the PAC22140, and PAC25140. These PACs are single-chip solutions that offer the industry's rare feature of supporting battery packs of up to 20 cells (the 20s) in series. These products incorporate intelligent motor control technology, enabling intelligent battery management solutions (BMS) for a wide range of industrial, e-mobility, and battery backup applications.
        With Qorvo's hardware and firmware ecosystem, the PAC22140 and PAC25140 are highly integrated, saving designers more than 50% of PCB space, reducing total BOM costs by 30%, and reducing time-to-market. These devices integrate all the necessary analog and power management peripherals with a 32-bit Arm® Cortex® M0 or M4F microcontroller, and feature cell balancing, monitoring, and protection for 10s-20s battery packs.

        The PAC22140 and PAC25140 provide access to multiple analog and digital peripherals required to manage today's multi-cell battery packs, including programmable gain differential amplifiers, multiple 16-bit sigma-delta ADCs for current and voltage sensing, and 10-bit SAR ADCs. The single-supply 145V DC/DC buck controller generates a 5V system supply rail for the device, while the integrated charge pump can charge and discharge the FET driver. 
        End users are increasingly looking to extend battery life, reduce charge times and reduce the overall weight of battery-powered applications, and their need for more battery cell solutions is bound to grow," said Brian McCarthy, senior manager of Qorvo's PAC product line. The highly integrated PAC22140 and PAC25140 provide designers with a complete solution to meet the demand for high power, high-performance systems." 
        The PAC22140 and PAC25140 offer a low-power sleep mode (less than 3µA) while utilizing push-button wake-up, timer, or charger detection functions for longer storage times. The integrated high voltage buck converter powers the system from a 5V regulated supply with a maximum current of 225mA, reducing heat dissipation issues. The integrated 3.3V LDO provides up to 90mA for running other peripherals. An analog MUX is connected to the SAR ADC for security checks on the internal nodes. 
        The PAC22140 is available in a 9 x 9 mm 60-pin QFN package and is currently in volume production; the PAC25140 is available in a 10 x 10 mm 68-pin QFN package and is currently available for sampling and will be in volume production in April 2023. Qorvo also offers the PAC22140EVK1 and PAC25140EVK1 hardware development kits to help users develop intelligent BMS solutions using fully integrated Arm Cortex-M microcontrollers and BMS-specific analog front ends (AFEs).
