According to a report by Taiwan Media Economic Daily, it has been reported in the industry that TSMC and World Advanced have recently lowered their 8-inch foundry quotations due to weak terminal demand and market competition, with the highest drop of up to 30%.
According to industry assessments, TSMC's main revenue and profit momentum come from 12-inch foundries and high-end processes. The decline in 8-inch foundries has limited impact on TSMC.However, World Advanced only has an 8-inch foundry business. It is estimated that the foundry production process will take about three months. The related impact should appear after October and November this year, and World Advanced's fourth-quarter performance may be affected.
Fang Lue, chairman of World Advanced, said at the legal briefing that it is true that there are major international manufacturers bargaining to have some impact on World Advanced's operations, and World Advanced will deal with it head-on.
Fang said that although the utilization rate of FAB is expected to be flat in the second half of 2023, World Advanced believes that due to inventory adjustments and the global economic recovery, its 8-inch FAB utilization rate will increase in the future. In addition, World Advanced will continue to carefully evaluate capacity expansion and 12-inch factory construction plans.
Regarding the issue of price cuts, Nomura Securities analyzed that it was mainly in response to the large price cuts of Texas Instruments (TI), the global leader in analog ICS, in power management ICS and other products, which triggered a global chip price war and impacted related industries.
Related IC design factories therefore hope that TSMC, World Advanced and other foundries will reduce prices to reduce costs and compete with TI.Rumor has it that TSMC and World Advanced have given price reductions of about 10% to 30% based on customer order volumes and different purchase models.
