Apple is opening a new development site in Israel to develop new Apple silicon chips for future Macs, the company announced on July 28.
The announcement was made in a LinkedIn post by Elad Wertheimer, who is responsible for recruiting Apple's chip talent, according to the Times of Israel. According to Wertheimer, Apple's new development site will be involved in several flagship Israeli-led projects, including the cutting-edge "Mac processor of the future.
Apple is already known to operate two development sites in Israel, in Herzliya and Haifa. Johny Srouji, Apple's senior vice president of hardware technology, is from Israel and is responsible for establishing the Israel Development Center, which currently employs about 2,000 people in Israel.
Johny Srouji said last month, "Through development in Israel, Apple manages and streamlines data storage technology in a range of devices, including the wireless communications components of Apple Watch, and integrated circuits developed in Israel. The Israeli team also played a central role in developing advanced versions of the company's flagship M1 processor, including the M1 Pro and M1 Max chips, designed to support high-end Mac computers such as the MacBook Pro and MacBook Studio. These chips are manufactured in Israel while working with other teams around the world, including at Apple's headquarters in Cupertino."
Since 2011, Apple has significantly expanded its operations in Israel, focusing on semiconductor design, testing and engineering. Earlier this year, the Times of Israel reported that Apple's Israeli team directly supported the development of the M1 chip.
