April 19, 2023 - Grand Alliance Holdings, a leading distributor of semiconductor components for the Asia Pacific market, announced that its subsidiary Pinnacle has launched the ISELED automotive ambient lighting solution based on Microchip's dsPIC33CK256MP508-IPT development platform.

Automotive cabin lighting is developing in the direction of intelligence, and the RGB LED controls enable cooler interior lighting effects to increase the personalized driving experience. The combination of intelligent cabin lighting systems with ADAS assisted driving systems can also serve as a warning to drivers and improve driving safety. However, as the number of in-vehicle LED applications grows, traditional solutions using external LED driver chips are facing significant design challenges. The basic idea behind ISELED is that parameters that would otherwise require external processors (such as brightness and color stability) are transferred to the RGB LEDs themselves, allowing the LEDs to be "digitized" so that they can be used in a "streamlined" way through a This allows the LED to be "digitized" so that it can be controlled by a "streamlined" communication protocol that encodes the address and only needs to read the target parameters indicating color and brightness.
Based on Microchip dsPIC33CK256MP508-IPT development platform, the automotive ambient lighting solution from GrandTech supports ISELED protocol, which reduces the complex design challenges of automotive cabin ambient lighting while allowing users to design smarter product applications at low cost.
The dsPIC33CK256MP508-IPT development board includes the dsPIC33CK development board, the ISELED interface board and the ISELED development board, which simplifies the design requirements for SELED automotive ambient lighting and reduces the design cost investment.
The dsPIC33CK is a high-performance digital signal controller (DSC) from Microchip that brings low cost and simpler design requirements to ISELED automotive ambient lighting. Its built-in CIP modules (SPI, DMA, CRC, 5V I/O) are used to implement the hardware-based ISELED protocol, thus minimizing software intervention. The standalone SPI supporting 5-bit hardware mode and the flexible CRC engine simplify ISELED frame creation. dMA increases the throughput of ISELED, thus allowing complex animations and lighting effects to be implemented with this solution. 5 V I/O allows direct connection to ISELED without any bonding logic or external level converters, which greatly reduces system risk. In addition, the dsPIC33CK supports CAN-FD and LIN communication as well as a robust waterproof capacitive touch sensor, enabling the integration of advanced functions such as HMI touch.
With this solution, a maximum of 4079 LEDs can be connected in series in a single circuit, and the color brightness of each LED can be controlled independently, which simplifies the relationship between MCU, driver chip and LEDs, greatly reducing the workload of external MCU and further avoiding the disadvantages of external LED driver solutions.
