Honda Motor announced on April 26 that it has entered into a strategic cooperation agreement with TSMC to ensure a stable supply of semiconductors, according to media reports.

During the spread of the New Crown epidemic, Japanese automakers have struggled to fully escape the impact of tight global chip and parts supplies. Although semiconductor and parts restrictions have eased, Honda CEO Toshihiro Mibe said at a press conference that he will establish direct partnerships with chipmakers to achieve a stable long-term supply of chips.
Mibe noted, "Honda will work closely with Tier 1 and semiconductor manufacturers and take significant initiatives to move forward. In the past, there may have been little direct discussion between automakers, including Honda, and semiconductor manufacturers."
Mibe added that Honda has reached a basic agreement with TSMC on strategic cooperation. The agreement includes sharing information about production and parts supply, with a focus on securing the supply of integrated circuits and other components. Honda Chief Operating Officer Shinji Aoyama said Honda expects to start seeing the impact of its partnership with TSMC starting in fiscal 2025.
TSMC said in an emailed statement that it is committed to being a "trusted long-term technology and capacity provider for customers to unlock their innovation. "TSMC continues to work closely with major global automotive IC companies to support their success." TSMC, however, did not elaborate.
Honda is sticking to its goal of reaching 100 percent of sales of pure electric vehicles and fuel cell vehicles (FCEVs) by 2040, and said it plans to launch four new pure electric models in Japan by 2026. Honda also said it plans to launch a mid-size electric car in the U.S. in 2025, which will use the company's new "electric and electronic" architecture platform.
Mibe also revealed that Honda is considering increasing revenue from all-electric vehicles by charging for software and digital services. "I don't think things are as simple as they used to be, and you can't increase profits just by increasing sales." However, Mibe did not reveal further details.
