IBM today announced via its website that the company plans to build its first European quantum data centre in Eningen, Germany, to facilitate access to cutting-edge quantum computing capabilities for governments, businesses and institutions.
The data centre, which is expected to be operational by 2024, will be equipped with multiple IBM quantum computing systems, each with utility-scale quantum processors, i.e. processors with more than 100 quantum bits.
In addition, the establishment of the data centre also marks the completion of the IBM Quantum Europe cloud region. The move is to ensure that IBM complies with EU regulatory requirements so that all EU work data is processed within the EU. It is also the second quantum data centre and quantum cloud region to be built by IBM globally, following New York.
Europe has a group of the world's most advanced quantum computing users and interest in quantum computing will only grow as the era of utility-scale quantum processors approaches," said Jay Gambetta, IBM vice president of quantum. This new IBM quantum data centre and cloud region will provide European users with a new option to help them harness the power of quantum computing to solve some of the world's most challenging problems."
Information on IBM's official website informed that IBM already has more than 60 quantum computing customers in Europe, including Bosch, the German Federal Defence University, CERN and T-Systems, a division of Deutsche Telekom.
