New IBM z16 and IBM LinuxONE Rockhopper 4 designed to deliver a modern and flexible hybrid cloud platform that provides support for digital transformation across multiple IT environments
The new single frame versions of IBM z16 and IBM LinuxONE 4 were released on April 4 EST, extending their capabilities to a broader range of data centre environments. Based on IBM Telum processors, both products are designed to create sustainable, efficient data centres that help customers better cope with the uncertainties of the digital economy and global markets.
IBM releases new single-chassis versions of z16 and LinuxONE 4

IBM z16 multi-chassis versions, available in April 2022, help transform the industry with real-time AI inference and quantum security encryption at scale. IBM LinuxONE Emperor 4, available in September 2022, reduces energy consumption and data centre footprint while delivering the scalability, performance and security customers need. The new single cabinet expands customers' options for IT infrastructure with the space, sustainability and standardization benefits that are critical to today's data centre environment.
IBM is always at the forefront of innovation to help our customers cope with the changing market environment," said Ross Mauri, General Manager, IBM zSystems and LinuxONE. We are committed to protecting our customers' investments in their existing infrastructure while helping them innovate with AI and quantum security technologies. This new release allows companies of all sizes to seamlessly enable IBM z16 and LinuxONE Rockhopper 4 to coexist with distributed infrastructures and bring even greater capabilities."
Tailored for changing IT environments to support new usage scenarios
Industries across all sectors are balancing the growing challenges of delivering integrated digital services. According to the latest IBM Cloud Transformation Index report, respondents generally identified security, management of complex environments and compliance as the main challenges to integrating workloads in the hybrid cloud. Stricter environmental regulations and continuing rising costs are likely to exacerbate these challenges.
We see tremendous value in leveraging the IBM z16 platform in a hybrid cloud environment," said Bo Gebbie, chairman of Evolving Solutions. Leveraging these highly secure systems to handle high volumes of transactional workloads, combined with cloud-native technologies, provides a higher level of agility and cost optimization for our customers and our own business."
The new IBM z16 and LinuxONE 4 products are built for building modern data centres, designed to optimise their agility and sustainability, with zone-level power monitoring and other environmental metrics. For example, consolidating Linux workloads onto the IBM LinuxONE Rockhopper 4 can reduce energy consumption by 75 percent and space by 67 percent compared to x86 servers running in similar conditions and locations.2 Customers can still enjoy IBM's signature security and transaction processing capabilities in these new products.
Customers equipping their data centres with the above products will generate new usage scenarios, including
Sustainable design: Easier integration into hot and cold aisle thermal managed data centres that use common power supplies and heat sinks.
Optimised AI solutions: With on-chip AI inference and the latest IBM z/OS 3.1, customers can train or deploy AI models in very close proximity to their data and continuously optimise them, whether in single or multi-cabinet configurations.
Data privacy: Safeguard data sovereignty in regulated industries by imposing compliance and regulatory restrictions on the location of data, resulting in more efficient rack usage when processing local transactions in local data centres.
Edge computing: Achieve higher utilisation in limited rack space near manufacturing, medical equipment or other edge devices.
Securing data on highly available systems[2]
IBM z16 and LinuxONE systems are known for security, resiliency and large-scale transaction processing," said Matt Eastwood, senior vice president at IDC. Customers can now use a single-cabinet version in their new environment and enjoy the same standards of security and resilience, providing flexibility in the data centre. At the same time, this provides additional business opportunities for IBM partners who can integrate IBM zSystems and LinuxONE capabilities into their existing architectures and gain more customers."
IBM is working with a wide range of ISV partners of IBM zSystems to address compliance and cybersecurity issues. For customers running data services, core banking and digital asset workloads, better compliance and security capabilities are key to protecting sensitive personal data and existing technology investments.
