Belgian microelectronics research center (Interuniversity Microelectronics Centre, imec) plans to set up a stronghold in Germany, of which Dresden (Dresden) will become the first choice, in addition to imec may cooperate with the German automotive industry.

Microelectronics Research Center CEO Luc Van den hove (Luc Van den hove) confirmed that the consideration of the establishment of a branch in Germany, "we will be evaluated next year". Van den hove said that one of the reasons for choosing Germany was government subsidies, but that contacts with local semiconductor experts were also a major consideration.
He emphasized that imec has no intention of competing with German research institutes, but rather of building partnerships.
Analysis said that Dresden in eastern Germany was originally Europe's largest semiconductor colony, Germany's automotive chip maker Infineon (Infineon) is expanding its plant, TSMC planning to build Europe's first wafer fab here, where many years of Gerhardt Core (GlobalFoundries) is also interested in expanding its production capacity, Dresden is clearly the preferred choice for the establishment of the branch of imec.
imec expansion to Germany, may be with the strong German automotive industry cooperation. imec is currently launching a program, and automakers, chip and foundry manufacturers to join forces to develop standards, the most advanced semiconductor technology used in automobiles.
In addition to plans to set up a branch in Germany, van den Hove revealed in an interview in early November that it plans to set up a base in Hokkaido in 2024 in order to support Japanese company Rapidus in localizing next-generation semiconductors. The site is expected to be selected near the location where Rapidus plans to build a factory in Chitose City, with a staff size of tens of people.
