Amazon on Nov. 28 announced a new AI (artificial intelligence) chip Trainium2, Graviton4 processor for its cloud computing service in response to increased competition in the Microsoft-dominated artificial intelligence market.

Adam Selipsky, CEO of Amazon AWS, announced in Las Vegas, USA, the launch of Trainium2, a second-generation chip designed specifically for training AI systems, which has four times the performance of its predecessor and twice the energy efficiency. The chip can be deployed in EC2 UltraCluster clusters of up to 100,000 chips, allowing for efficient training of basic and large language models.
In addition, Amazon introduced Graviton4, the company's fourth custom processor chip, which delivers 30 percent more performance, 50 percent more cores and 75 percent more memory bandwidth than its predecessor to help provide the best price/performance and energy efficiency for all types of workloads in the Amazon EC2 cloud service. The processor also encrypts all high-speed physical hardware interfaces to improve security.
Just a few weeks ago, Microsoft announced its own AI chip, Maia, and Google has its own TPU tensor computing unit. Now Google, Microsoft, Amazon, and other big players have all launched their own custom AI chips to avoid over-reliance on NVIDIA for development of technologies such as catering to large language models.
Selipsky said AWS will start offering new training chips in 2024. However, AWS cloud services will continue to provide customers with services based on NVIDIA's latest chips.
Amazon and Microsoft are known to use the Arm architecture for their customized chips, which is part of the cloud computing major's attempt to move away from reliance on processors made by Intel and AMD. Another tech company, Oracle, is using chips from startup Ampere Computing for its cloud services.
