Infineon's power module chips (IGBTs) supplied to Hyundai Motor's IONIQ 5 produced a large number of defective products. Since all the chips for 2 months were scrapped, the possibility of IONIQ 5 production interruption from this month increased.
In response to this rumor, Infineon said that in the spring of this year, a former manufacturing plant of the company had a deviation in the production process, and the relevant products were not shipped to the customers. At present, this problem has been solved. Subsequently, the company increased the product output, and so far, the output has exceeded the initial planned output.
IGBT chip is a power semiconductor device used for electric vehicles, mainly used for the output control of AC motors of electric vehicles, railway locomotives and EMUs. IGBT directly controls the conversion of DC and AC, and determines the torque and maximum output power of the drive system. Therefore, the acceleration ability, maximum speed and energy efficiency of your car depend on it.
IGBT accounts for about half of the cost of the motor drive system and 5% of the cost of the whole vehicle. It is the second highest cost component of the whole electric vehicle (the first highest cost is the battery).
According to South Korean media reports, Infineon has recently confirmed that the power module chips produced from early April to early June are defective, saying that the specific reason is that they are defective in the process of replacing the existing nitrogen ions and injecting the latest process aluminum ions.

Hyundai motor is discussing with Infineon and other global automotive semiconductor suppliers to seek a solution for the production of IONIQ 5 without interruption. However, the industry predicted that Infineon would be difficult to significantly shorten the supply schedule.
