In August 2019, when cerebras systems released its products, the hardware industry caused quite a shock. Many people are skeptical about this novel "wafer level" technology. Different from the traditional chip design direction (pursuing smaller size), cerebras systems' products appear in wafer level size, and its chip power is estimated to be about 15kw.

However, in the past three years, under the leadership of founder and CEO Andrew Feldman, the company has won many support including early critics through a series of impressive milestone products. Just one month after its products were launched, the company signed a multi laboratory contract with the U.S. Department of energy. Today, there are many high-profile equipment applications in government laboratories and commercial places around the world.
On August 3 this year, the computer history museum (CHM) awarded cerebras the honor of displaying cerebras' wafer level engine (WSE) chip in the landmark building in mountain view, California.
Cerebras wse-2 is about the size of a dinner plate, containing 2.6 trillion transistors and 850000 artificial intelligence (AI) optimization cores. With the support of wse-2, the artificial intelligence model processed by cerebras CS-2 system has reached billions or even trillions of parameters.
"So far, the number of transistors in this cerebras chip is more than the total number of 100000 computer collections in the museum's permanent collection," said DAG Spicer, senior curator of the computer history museu.
Wse-2 is manufactured by TSMC on its 7Nm node and is the driving core of the second generation wafer scale. The volume of wse-2 is 46225mm2, more than 50 times larger than the mainstream chip. Wse-2 was launched in 2021. The number of transistors, the number of cores, the memory, the memory bandwidth and the system bandwidth of wse-2 are twice that of the first generation products, while its power consumption is only slightly increased (from 20kw to 23KW). Feldman said that the next generation chip plans to adopt 5nm process technology and will include more cores to deal with the rapidly growing computing needs of AI.
Cerebras has customers in North America, Asia, Europe and the Middle East. Flagship customers include GlaxoSmithKline, AstraZeneca, totalenergies, nference, Argonne National Laboratory, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, Pittsburgh Supercomputing Center, Leibniz Supercomputing Center, National Supercomputing application center, Edinburgh Parallel Computing Center (EPCC), national energy technology laboratory and Tokyo electronic equipment company.
