Intel today expanded its data center chip portfolio and introduced a series of flex series GPUs optimized for servers.
Flex series includes two GPUs. The first GPU is configured with 16 graphics processing cores and 12gb on-board memory, and the second GPU is configured with 32 cores and 16GB memory. Moreover, these two chips are based on Intel Xe HPG graphics architecture, which is optimized for running video games.
Intel said the two chips support a variety of workloads.
Flex series can perform video transcoding or change the file format in which video content is stored. As part of the daily technical operation, broadcasting companies and other types of enterprises regularly perform transcoding. Intel said that the flex series also supports cloud based video game streaming services, virtual desktop environments and artificial intelligence applications.
According to Intel, a single flex series chip can transcode up to 36 video streams with a resolution of 1920x1080 pixels at the same time. Enterprises requiring additional performance can use multiple GPUs in parallel configuration. According to Intel, 10 flex series GPUs can be integrated into one server to process 360 video streams at a time.
Intel said that in some cases, flex series provides better performance than NVIDIA chips of the same kind. In the internal performance test, the throughput of Intel flex series chip in performing video transcoding is 5 times that of NVIDIA A10 GPU, and the power consumption is only half of the latter.
The excellent performance of flex series is partly due to the built-in hardware module, which can run AV1 video coding software after optimization. Encoding or compressing video files is usually a part of the transcoding workflow. Intel said that the AV1 module built in the flex series GPU allows it to perform processing tasks with 30% less bandwidth than the previous generation coding system AVC.
Another major purpose of Intel's flex series is for video game streaming. Intel specifically mentioned that Android game developers can use flex series chips to handle certain computing tasks of user devices. According to Intel, a single flex series GPU can handle up to 68 video game streams with a resolution of 1280x720 pixels,.
Jeff McVeigh, vice president of Intel and general manager of supercomputing division, said: "today's data center infrastructure is under tremendous pressure in computing, encoding, decoding, moving, storing and displaying visual information. Intel flex series GPU is a breakthrough design that uniquely addresses today's computing needs and provides flexibility and scalability for future immersive experiences."
In the next few months, Intel expects six hardware manufacturers to launch data center systems equipped with flex series GPUs. According to Intel, the initially released systems will be optimized for transcoding and Android game streaming. Next, Intel hardware partners will launch flex series processors optimized for desktop virtualization, windows game streaming, and AI applications.
The Xe HPG graphics architecture adopted by flex series is one of the four architectures developed by Intel to establish greater influence in the GPU market. Intel also introduced the Xe HPC architecture for data centers, which is designed to run artificial intelligence workloads. Xe HPC chip contains more circuits optimized for matrix operation, which is a calculation used by neural network to process data.
Xe HPC architecture is the infrastructure of Intel Ponte Vecchio, which is the most advanced AI chip launched by Intel for the data center market. The Ponte Vecchio chip contains 100 billion transistors, which are organized into dozens of processing modules. According to Intel, these modules can provide comprehensive performance of more than 45 teraflops.
