According to reports, the US semiconductor giant Intel is preparing to build a chip packaging plant with an investment of several billion euros in Italy. The Italian government and Intel have finalized Vigasio, a town in northeastern Italy's Veneto region, as the location for the chip factory, two people familiar with the matter said.
Intel last year announced plans to invest $800 million in Europe over the next decade. The investment project in Italy will include a new advanced semiconductor packaging and assembly plant. The initial investment of the Italian chip packaging plant is 4.5 billion euros, and the investment will be expanded in the future.
According to Intel, the factory will create 1,500 direct jobs and 3,500 indirect jobs through suppliers and partners. The completion and commissioning of the plant is expected between 2025 and 2027.
It is reported that the main business of this Italian factory is semiconductor packaging, which will use the latest technology to package semiconductor components into complete chip products.
Sources said that at the beginning of this month, all parties involved in the project had formulated a detailed investment plan, but the plan was officially announced, and it needed to wait for the end of the parliamentary elections in Italy on September 25.
An Intel spokesman did not comment on the investment plan, saying the project was still in progress and needed to be kept under wraps.
In addition, in order to develop Italy's local semiconductor manufacturing industry, the Italian government is also actively negotiating with other semiconductor giants, including STMicroelectronics, Hughes Electronic Materials, TSMC and Italy's Tower Semiconductor. It should be noted that Intel acquired Tower Semiconductor earlier this year.
