On August 8, according to the latest report released by foreign technology media The Information, Apple placed a huge chip order with TSMC, but required that unqualified chips be borne by TSMC.

This is very rare in the semiconductor industry. This is mainly because the chip company will cut the wafer to make multiple chips. In the process, there will be yield problems. Some chips will not work properly, and some chips will not meet the expected standards, but these costs are usually borne by the buyer. The huge orders made by Apple and TSMC require billing based on the amount of qualified chips, which means TSMC bears the cost of unqualified chips generated in the production process.
In the report, The Information believes that for the new 3nm process, Apple and TSMC can reach such an agreement, which can save billions of dollars. The report said that TSMC's initial 3nm yield is about 70%25, and as the process improves, the yield will be further improved.
According to media reports, Apple accounts for 23%25 of TSMC's $72 billion revenue in 2022, making Apple "TSMC's largest customer to date." There have been reports for months that Apple has acquired all of TSMC's 3nm manufacturing capacity in the short term, while The Information reports that TSMC's 3nm technology will be available exclusively to Apple for "about a year" before it is able to allow any other company to use it. For TSMC, Apple is willing to be the first customer for the 3nm process, and the huge order volume can help the company pay for the research and development of new nodes, as well as the facilities to manufacture them.
