Recently, the Semiconductor Equipment Association of Japan (SEAJ) announced the latest sales figures for semiconductor manufacturing equipment in the country.

The data show that sales of semiconductor manufacturing equipment (including exports) in Japan in December 2022 were 306,596 million yen (provisional), a decrease of 8.6% from the previous month (November 2022 was determined to be 335,495 million yen) and an increase of 1.1% from the same month of the previous year (December 2021 was 303,366 million yen).
Previously, SEAJ had predicted that the semiconductor manufacturing equipment market performance in 2023 would be lower than that of the previous year.
Due to the deterioration of market conditions centered on DRAM, memory equipment investments were cut, based on which the organization expects the memory market to fully recover in 2024, coupled with large-scale investments to be made in various regions around the world, looking forward to a return to high growth rates.
The environment in which FPD manufacturing equipment is located continues to be affected by the new crown of unfavorable factors. As the unit price of panels for IT products (for PCs and tablet PCs) and TVs continues to decline, the revenue of display panel manufacturers has also declined. Most of the equipment investments are on hold, and the situation will be more severe especially in FY2023. On the other hand, investment in G8 substrates for OLEDs is expected to begin in 2024. IT products equipped with OLED panels are being hotly debated, and the industry wants to invest in G8 substrates with higher production efficiency compared to the previous OLEDs for smartphones, as the size of each panel has become larger, and equipment manufacturers are making preparations. G6 substrates, the technological threshold is very different, so it is expected that Japanese semiconductor manufacturing equipment makers, who are leaders in technology development, will make their mark.
SEAJ expects that overall sales of manufacturing equipment in Japan will decrease by 6.6% to 3,861.4 billion yen in 2023 due to a possible decline in investment in semiconductors and FPDs. in FY2024, semiconductors and FPDs will increase significantly by 20% and 50%, respectively, and are expected to grow by 22.8% overall to 4,742.2 billion yen.
SEAJ expects sales of FPD manufacturing equipment in Japan to decrease by 20% to 361.6 billion yen in 2023 due to LCD investments mostly being put on hold, among other reasons. Thereafter, with the improvement in panel supply and demand, as well as the gradual release of G8 substrate OLED investment using new technology, Japan's FPD manufacturing equipment sales are expected to increase by 50% to 542.5 billion yen in 2024.
