Kioxia announces the launch of its second generation XL-FLASH storage-level memory solution. This is a storage Class memory (SCM) solution based on its BiCS FLASH 3D flash technology, which can effectively reduce cost and provide high performance and low latency products.
Storage Class Memory (SCM) is the industry's unified name for a new storage medium between flash and memory, and the familiar Aeon 3D-XPoint is SCM. Samsung's Z-NAND, which is more of an improved version of existing NAND.
The second-generation XL-FLASH storage-grade memory solution is designed to bring higher performance and lower cost to data centers, enterprise servers and storage systems, according to Armored Man. Looking ahead, the technology may also be applied to CXL (Compute Express Link) products. Samsung and SK Hynix have already introduced CXL memory, both based on DDR5 DRAM.
The second generation XL-FLASH uses the existing SLC flash memory, but also adds a new multi-lever cell (MLC) that stores two bits of data per cell, thus reducing costs. Previously, the first generation used a 128Gb flash chip, and the second generation has been increased to 256Gb, along with an increase in data throughput. Two, four or eight layers of chips can also be stacked in the same package.
Armor Man said it will demonstrate the second-generation XL-FLASH storage-level memory solution in a keynote presentation at the Flash Memory Summit (FMS) worldwide in early August this year. In addition, related samples are scheduled to be shipped in November this year and are expected to enter mass production in 2023.
