South Korean chip company Sapeon released its latest X330 chip on Nov. 16, trying to join the fierce global competition in AI chip development and challenge NVIDIA's position.

The Sapeon X330 is a neural processing unit (NPU), manufactured using TSMC's 7nm process, mainly for data centers, and will be mass-produced in the first half of 2024. Officially, the chip is four times as powerful as the X220, which will launch in 2020, and is twice as energy efficient.
In a press release, Sapeon's CEO said the X330 chip features improved functionality, enhanced floating-point performance, and offers scalability that facilitates the connection of multiple chips, making it more suitable for processing large language models. In addition, the product is able to support related cloud technologies and provide results through a cloud platform; the chip integrates modules related to video codecs and post-processing for more versatile functionality.
The previous-generation X220 chip has been deployed in local data centers in South Korea, but the X330 is aimed at the global market.
The X330 chip is said to be available in two models, the X330 Compact with 367 TFLOPs of computing power and 16GB of integrated memory, and the X330 Prime with 734 TFLOPs of computing power and 32GB of integrated memory.
Sapeon, which was spun off as an independent company from SK Telecom in 2022 and in which three SK Group companies have invested a total of 80 billion won ($61.2 million), said it hopes to contribute to the availability of advanced AI technology at low prices by increasing the use of AI chips in a variety of industries.
Sapeon plans to launch a self-driving car chip IP along with the X330 chip, as well as an AI NPU for security cameras and other devices.
