USB-C is rapidly gaining popularity in the industrial sector thanks to its ultra-thin design, user-friendly universal connector experience, and versatility by supporting multiple data protocols such as USB4, Thunderbolt and HDMI. In addition, USB-C can support up to 240 W of charging power, a feature that makes it the power connector of choice for a wide range of applications. To meet the growing demand for reliable end-to-end power and data transfer capabilities in modern mobile devices, Infineon Technologies AG has introduced the EZ-PD™ CMG2, an even more powerful USB-C Electronically Marked Cable Assemblies (EMCA) controller, which has been designed to provide the necessary power for the EPR (Extended Power Range, or Extended Power Range) support. The controller is designed to provide a robust USB-C powered (PD) solution for applications such as USB-C, USB4 and Thunderbolt passive cables that support EPR (Extended Power Range).
The USB-C PD controllers in Infineon's EZ-PD product family are the industry's most comprehensive USB-C power solution. the EZ-PD CMG2 (Cable Marker Generation 2) is an EMCA-specific controller designed for passive non-Thunderbolt and Thunderbolt Type-C cables. The EZ-PD CMG2 (Cable Marker Generation 2) is a dedicated EMCA controller designed for passive non-Thunderbolt cables and Thunderbolt Type-C cables, and supports USB-PD 3.1 and Type-C 2.1 standards. USB-C EMCA cables based on the EZ-PD CMG2 support USB4 and TBT4 interface data rates and charging power up to 240 W (48 V/5 A). The EZ-PD CMG2 integrates features such as VBUS-to-CC short-circuit protection (short-circuit over-voltage protection up to 54 V) and VBUS-to-VCONN short-circuit protection (short-circuit over-voltage protection up to 54 V). The VBUS to CC short circuit protection (short circuit overvoltage protection up to 54 V) is integrated. In addition, the controller has a reduced RA for lower power consumption and integrated oscillator and IEC ESD (Electrostatic Discharge) protection for operation without an external clock and external ESD.
The new controller offers configurable 47 bytes of memory for storing vendor- and cable-specific configuration data and is capable of operating over the 2.7 V to 5.5 V VCONN supply voltage range. Among other things, the CC, VCONN1, and VCONN2 pins support high voltage protection up to 54 V, which prevents accidental shorting of the high-voltage VBUS pin on the Type-C connector, thus increasing safety in use.The EZ-PD CMG2 controller is seamlessly compatible with a wide range of USB-C devices and cables. It offers a single-chip solution with a size of only 3.3 mm², which simplifies design and shortens development time. With its excellent system reliability and compatibility, manufacturers can introduce cost-effective, simple designs with a smaller board footprint.
