Korean media: TSMC's 3nm yield is only 50% and Samsung is "perfect"

According to the analysis of semiconductor professionals, the current yield of TSMC N3 process is 60-70% at the low level and 70-80% at the high level, which is similar to the initial level of 5nm process.
In contrast, the initial yield of Samsung 3GAE is much lower, estimated at 10-20%, and has not been significantly improved, and the chip quality is also uneven.

For such a statement, the South Korean side is absolutely not convinced.
On January 10, according to the report of the Korea Economic Daily, market sources said that Samsung has significantly improved the yield and output of its cutting-edge 3nm process to compete with the leading manufacturer of wafer foundry, TSMC, which has also formally mass-produced the 3nm process.
According to the report, South Korea's Samsung officially announced the mass production of 3nm process using GAA technology at the end of June 2022, and the first customer using this process was an IC design company in China.
However, at that time, the yield of Samsung's 3nm process was only 10% - 20%, which made other potential customers uninterested.
However, a senior Samsung executive pointed out that Samsung's 3nm process yield has reached the "perfect level" at this stage, and it is also developing the second-generation 3nm process without hesitation.
The report also stressed that TSMC has just announced that the 3nm process for mass production is based on the traditional FinFET technology, while Samsung's 3nm process is the industry's first node process technology using GAA technology, which can effectively improve chip performance and reduce energy consumption.
Therefore, the yield of Samsung 3nm process has been improved, which means that the profitability of this node process can be improved.
In addition, although TSMC lags behind Samsung's mass production of 3nm process technology for about half a year, according to relevant media reports, the yield of TSMC's 3nm process, which will be first adopted by Apple in the future, is as high as 85%, significantly superior to Samsung.
However, South Korean market participants do not seem to believe such a good performance, saying that such achievements are exaggerated. Considering the quantity and time of TSMC supplying 3nm chips to Apple, the first customer to use, it is estimated that its yield rate is only 50% at most.
The report further pointed out that after Samsung and TSMC entered the era of 3nm process, the 3nm process will become the mainstream of wafer foundry market in the future.
Therefore, it is estimated that by 2025, the output value of the 3nm process market will be as high as US $25.5 billion, surpassing the US $19.3 billion estimated at that time for the 5nm process.
According to the survey data of TrendForce, the market research unit, in the third quarter of 2022, in the global wafer foundry market, TSMC still ranked first with 53.4% market share, while Samsung ranked second with only 16.4% market share.
Therefore, under the fierce market competition, the 3nm process will also become the key to the main competition between the two companies in the future.
PS: Korean media and Taiwan media have long been used to bragging and stepping on each other, but TSMC and Samsung never officially release the exact yield figures. It's better to look at the products.
