According to LMC's official website, LMC and SBI Holdings Corporation (SBI) reached an agreement on July 5 to cooperate in the construction of a 12-inch wafer foundry in Japan. The agreement was signed in Tokyo by TSMC Chairman Huang Chongren and SBI Chairman Yoshitaka Kitao. The two sides will jointly establish a preparatory company under the framework of this agreement, and through the company to start 12-inch wafer fab-related planning and construction operations.
Gloria Huang said that SBI is the only professional foundry company with storage and logic technology capabilities, and will use self-developed 22/28nm+ process and wafer on wafer technology to meet the multiple applications arising from future AI edge computing, as well as to fill the gap of local automotive chips. SBI will develop deeper cooperation with Japanese industry, government and academia to participate in revitalizing Japan's semiconductor supply chain, and further promote the internationalization of TSMC's production and sales.
Previously, Huang Chongren attended an event to express his views on the beginning of the construction of fabs in various countries, he believes that the construction of fabs is definitely not simple, the outside world to see China Taiwan to build fabs seems to be very easy, frankly speaking, to other countries such as the United States has been very troublesome, look at the Arizona plant is very difficult to do, in Japan, mainland China may be a little better, other countries / regions also have difficulties.
