According to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs), a 7.0-magnitude earthquake hit the northern part of the Philippine island of Luzon (17.70 degrees north latitude, 120.55 degrees east longitude) at 8:43 local time on July 27, at a depth of 17 km. As of 8:49 a.m., there were two aftershocks, both measuring 2.1 magnitude.
It should be pointed out that the Philippines is one of the major production bases of passive components (especially MLCC) in the world. Murata, Samsung Electric, and Solar Inducer, the world's top three MLCC manufacturers, all have factories in the Philippines. Texas Instruments has had a factory in Baguio, a mountain resort in the northern Philippines, since 1979. In 2007, TI invested $1 billion to build a new closed testing plant in the Clark Special Economic Zone in the Philippines. Both factories are on the island of Luzon. Due to the semiconductor factory equipment precision is very high, so the seismic requirements for plant and equipment is much higher than the average company, but because the semiconductor and the front panel process will use many chemicals and gases, mostly belongs to toxic substances, once a large earthquake, and not worry about the displacement of the machine is damaged, but afraid of equipment pipelines leakage, Or the earthquake caused by power outages to interrupt production lines and so on. Therefore, the outside world is concerned that the Philippines earthquake may trigger MLCC or closed test capacity supply.
The Philippines has seen its exports of semiconductors and electronics surge in recent years due to, among other factors, trade frictions with the United States. The Philippines Semiconductor and Electronics Industry Foundation (SEIPI) said the country's electronics exports hit a record high in 2021 due to strong market demand, the Philippine Star website reported at the beginning of 2022. Total electronics exports from the Philippines reached US $45.92 billion in 2021, up 12.9 percent from US $40.67 billion in 2020 and also higher than SEIPI's previous estimate of 10 percent, SEIPI said in a statement.
