Singapore-based Silicon Box this week opened a new $2 billion advanced semiconductor manufacturing facility in Singapore, seeking to expand the application of "Chiplet" technology.
The startup, founded two years ago, said in its statement that the 73,000 square meter plant will be supported by Singapore's Economic Development Council and create more than 1,000 jobs. Silicon Box was founded by Sehat Sutardja, founder of U.S. chipmaker Marvell, with his wife Weili Dai and current CEO BJ Han, according to public information.
The company focuses on "Chiplet" technology, which can package chips the size of grains of sand together and can be used in everything from data centers to home appliances. In recent years, as the cost of making chips has skyrocketed, the global chip industry has increasingly adopted "Chiplet" technology to make transistors small enough to be measured by the number of atoms.
BJ Han, chief executive, said "customers were already queuing up" even before the plant opened, with demand driven by a large number of artificial intelligence companies, who are said to be in talks with Tenstorrent, a Canadian AI startup, for supplies.
