Micron's India Semiconductor Plant to Start Construction Next Month for Local Production in 18 Months

        India's IT minister plans to achieve indigenous semiconductor production within 18 months in an effort to boost and expand the technology manufacturing supply chain.
 
 
        India's first semiconductor assembly plant will break ground next month and begin producing the country's first localized chips by the end of 2024, according to a senior government official in charge of New Delhi's $10 billion chip manufacturing program. 
        U.S. semiconductor company Micron Technology is setting up a chip assembly and testing plant in Gujarat, and construction will begin in August on the $2.75 billion project (IT House note: currently about 19.938 billion yuan), said Ashwini Vaishnaw, India's minister of electronics and information technology. 
        India's central government, the Gujarat state government will provide 50% of the project's expenditure under the ATMP (assembly, testing, marking, packaging) program previously introduced to support the development of the semiconductor industry, respectively, 20%, which means that the Indian government subsidies accounted for up to 70% of the total expenditure. 
        The facility will be built in the Sanand area near Ahmedabad, Gujarat, and the new plant will enable assembly and test manufacturing of DRAM and NAND products, creating up to 5,000 new direct jobs and 15,000 community jobs over the next five years.
