Moov: Demand for Used Chip Manufacturing Equipment Soars Since Epidemic, Shows No Signs of Slowing Down

Steven Zhou, CEO of Moov Technologies, an online platform for trading used chip equipment, said that demand for used chip manufacturing equipment has surged since the start of the epidemic and shows little sign of slowing down.

In the midst of unprecedented chip shortages, chipmakers are turning to used equipment because they can't get enough new equipment to keep pace with their expansion plans," Steven Zhou reportedly noted. Since the epidemic, the number of used equipment we've brought online has grown hundreds of times per year on average, and revenues and transactions have increased by 100 percent. At the height of the global chip shortage, companies couldn't wait for new equipment. In some extreme cases, chipmakers often paid more for used equipment than new prices. Even with the economic downturn and low demand that the chip industry is currently facing, the demand for used equipment has not waned."
Lead times for some semiconductor equipment have reportedly increased from three to six months to as long as two years during the peak of the global chip shortage from 2021 to 2022, and prices for such equipment are soaring.
Regarding the market potential of used semiconductor equipment, Steven Zhou said, "In the past, the used semiconductor equipment market accounted for about 10% of the entire chip equipment market, which is valued at about $11.8 billion in 2022, according to SEMI. However, the used semiconductor equipment market may be much larger than estimated because it is decentralized and difficult to track, and the figure is close to $50 billion, including equipment used for chip manufacturing, chip packaging and testing."
In addition, Steven Zhou admits that tensions between the US and China have made it trickier to provide services in the Chinese market. After the U.S. government unveiled sweeping export controls on sales of advanced chip equipment to China last October, Moov rolled out a compliance system to accommodate the new regulations. "We launched a buyer certification process to really figure out where this tool is really going, what the end use is, and this is to better protect our buyers, sellers and customers." Steven Zhou explained.
