Nokia recently announced the acquisition of Fenix Group to strengthen its wireless offerings in the defense sector, which will also help strengthen its own competitiveness.
Fenix Group, a portfolio company of Enlightenment Capital, is understood to be a systems integrator specializing in battlefield technologies. The company has developed a variety of 3GPP-based tactical communications solutions, including a 4G portable network box (Banshee) and an innovative MANET device called Talon, which communicates directly between cell phones over a wireless mesh network, including blocking mobile CELLBLOCK phones from being interrogated or geo-located.
Their tactical communications solutions have been highly ranked and recognized in the defense market. Nokia intends to leverage its IP portfolio to accelerate investment in the development of more specific defense solutions, following state-of-the-art 3GPP standards and security requirements. The addition of Fenix's tactical communications capabilities will enable Nokia to offer a more comprehensive suite of solutions to its defense customers.
Also commenting on this, Dave Peterson, CEO of Fenix Group, said, "We are delighted to join Nokia."
Recently, Nokia sorely missed out on a partnership with AT&T, with which Ericsson signed a landmark five-year Network Transformation and Digitalization Strategy Agreement, which is designed to pioneer the future of programmable and intelligent networks, totaling approximately $14 billion. The deal is Ericsson's largest ever financial transaction.
Nokia now expects revenues from AT&T's mobile network to decline over the next 2-3 years. AT&T accounted for 5-8% of Nokia's mobile network net sales so far in 2023.
However Nokia and Deutsche Telekom announced that they have begun deploying a multi-vendor Open RAN network in Germany with Fujitsu of Japan.
