OCI, which recently completed its spin-off, will expand its production of semiconductor polysilicon through a joint venture with Tokuyama and an investment in the Gunsan plant's reprocessing facility, according to thelec. OCI has set a goal of expanding its semiconductor polysilicon sales to 800 billion won by 2027, which is set to quadruple semiconductor polysilicon sales compared to last year (219 billion won in 2022), and to quadruple semiconductor polysilicon sales (219 billion won in 2022), the company said. 219 billion won in 2022).

Industry sources said OCI is promoting the establishment of a joint venture with Japan's Tokuyama to expand the production of semiconductor polysilicon, which is progressing well. In May, OCI signed a memorandum of understanding with Japanese high-tech materials company Tokuyama to establish a semiconductor polysilicon joint venture in Malaysia, which is scheduled to be set up in the first half of next year. from 2027, the annual production of polysilicon semi-finished products for semiconductors will reach 11,000 tons.
Semi-finished products produced in Malaysia will undergo final processing at the Gunsan plant. For this reason, OCI has decided to build additional facilities at the Gunsan plant, which will be able to reprocess 5,000 tons of semi-finished products by the end of 2026.
OCI's move to establish a semiconductor polysilicon joint venture comes as global wafer makers plan to expand their facilities. The industry expects demand for semiconductor polysilicon to grow by more than 50% in 2026 compared to 2022.
OCI's Gunsan plant is its main production site, producing 4,700 tons of semiconductor11-12 N high-purity polysilicon annually. Polysilicon is used to make silicon wafers, which are the raw material for semiconductors. Semiconductor polysilicon requires higher purity than solar polysilicon (10-N polysilicon). Even globally, with semiconductor polysilicon production technology, there are only a few companies: OCI, Germany Wacker (Wacker), the United States Hemlock (Hemlock), Japan Tokuyama and so on.
It is understood that in the semiconductor polysilicon market, Chinese products lead to the risk of oversupply is significantly lower than solar polysilicon. In addition to the use of semiconductor wafer manufacturers license, as the final customer of the semiconductor company's license is also important. In addition, compared with the solar polysilicon market, the price is more stable. Semiconductor polysilicon from Chinese companies is currently being partially evaluated and used only by domestic wafer makers," the industry source said. It appears to be limited to semiconductor wafers below small diameter."
In addition to polysilicon, OCI will expand its existing products such as phosphoric acid, hydrogen peroxide and hexachloroethylsilane (HCDS), and seek new customers. Phosphoric acid and hydrogen peroxide are materials used to etch and clean semiconductors, respectively.HCDS is a precursor for thin film deposition. Production technology for hydrogen peroxide for semiconductors has been secured, and OCI has already supplied hydrogen peroxide to Japanese NAND flash memory company Armor Man.
A source at OCI said, "Semiconductor polysilicon sales are expected to grow to nearly 800 billion won in 2027. In addition to polysilicon, we will continue to aggressively invest in semiconductor materials such as phosphoric acid, hydrogen peroxide, and HCDS to realize sales of 1.1 trillion won by 2027."
