According to media reports, due to the temporary downturn in the storage semiconductor market, Samsung Electronics regards automotive semiconductors as a breakthrough. Recently, the company expressed its willingness to strengthen its automotive semiconductor business at a technology forum for partners and customers, including in the United States.
Samsung Electronics revealed that by 2024, it will add more than 10 mature and special processing equipment. The company will also increase the production capacity of these processes by 2.3 times.
So far, Samsung has focused its foundry investments on cutting-edge sub-7nm processes. But the company now plans to expand investments in mature production lines that make automotive semiconductors and image sensors.
Samsung Electronics said at the "Tech Day 2022" held in Silicon Valley in the United States that it will enter the automotive semiconductor market. To this end, Samsung Electronics has disclosed the "Exynos Auto V920", a new generation automotive chip (SoC) system produced using a 4nm process. It is worth mentioning that Samsung has promised to become the number one/number one player in the automotive memory chip market by 2025.
The automotive semiconductor market was worth $45 billion last year, but is expected to reach $74 billion by 2026 and more than $110 billion by 2030, according to market researcher IHS Markit.
Some analysts believe that Samsung Electronics is likely to establish a new foundry in Europe, because the world's largest auto companies are basically in Europe. It is reported that TSMC, the world's largest chip foundry, is also looking for a location to build an automotive semiconductor factory in Germany.
