To offset the downturn in the mobile market, Samsung Electronics is accelerating its pursuit of the automotive semiconductor sector. However, Samsung Electronics' current focus in the automotive sector is on "infotainment", i.e. systems that provide a variety of information and entertainment at the same time, as opposed to analogue semiconductors such as microcontroller units (MCUs) that control vehicles.
Several Korean media outlets, including Digital Daily, reported today that Samsung Electronics is developing a system-on-chip (SoC) for supply to BMW vehicles. Progress has already been made through close cooperation, for example with samples. The chip to be delivered to BMW will be the new "Exynos Auto V", according to industry sources.

Samsung Electronics is focusing on infotainment-related products in the field of autonomous driving," the insider said. It will be a competitor to Qualcomm, Nvidia and others".
The V series samples delivered are said to be equipped with a neural network processing unit (NPU), which supports AI calculations and can recognise the driver's voice, face and movements.
It is worth noting that Samsung Electronics' infotainment chips are already being supplied to Audi and Volkswagen. Sources say that Samsung is developing new products based on a 5nm process that will be supplied to Volkswagen and other companies. If the company can strike a deal with BMW, it will be in line to get another big customer.
It has previously worked with companies such as Tesla and Google on autonomous driving. Samsung is also supporting Google's self-driving car "Waymo" with chip design, following on from its foundry division producing chips for Tesla. Of course, Samsung also seems to be working with Google on the mobile chip Tensor.
Last month, Samsung Electronics announced on its Q4 2022 conference call that "we have strengthened the foundation for medium- to long-term growth by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with a US-based self-driving solutions company for product development".
