Samsung Electronics has announced that it has successfully developed its first 16 Gb DDR5 DRAM built using 12nm process technology and has completed a product evaluation with AMD on compatibility.

Less than six months later, on May 18, Samsung Electronics announced that this 12nm-class DDR5 has been mass-produced.
Thanks to the new process, it will feature higher energy efficiency and transfer rates. Compared to its predecessor, Samsung's new 12nm-class DDR5 DRAM consumes 23% less power, while increasing wafer utilisation by 20%.
Samsung was able to develop the 12nm-class process technology because of the use of a new high κ material that helps increase cell capacitance. The high capacitance causes significant potential differences in data signals, making it easier to accurately distinguish between these signals. The company's efforts to lower operating voltages and reduce noise also help to deliver the solutions that customers need.
Samsung's 12nm-class DDR5 DRAM line-up boasts a top speed of 7.2Gbps, or the speed at which two 30GB UHD movies can be processed in approximately one second, allowing it to support a growing number of applications, including data centres, artificial intelligence and next-generation computing.
