TDK Corporation has launched an ultra-compact TVS diode for ESD protection applications on USB-C ports and other high-speed interfaces. For high-speed interfaces (Tx / Rx) such as USB-C that comply with the USB4 (version 1) specification and transfer speeds of up to 40 Gbit/s, ESD protection applications especially require TVS diodes with ultra-low parasitic capacitance and low clamp voltage. The new types B74111U0033M060 and B74121U0033M060 are ideally suited for this type of application as they have a parasitic capacitance of 0.48 pF and 0.65 pF at 1 MHz respectively, a clamp voltage of only 3.8 V or 3.9 V and an ITLP of 8 A, which does not interfere with signal integrity. These TVS diode protection elements are designed for ESD discharge voltages up to 15 kV and are available in ultra-compact WLCSP 01005 and WLCSP 0201 low-profile packages with heights of 100µm and 150µm respectively, allowing easy integration into USB-C SIP modules.

The new B74111U0055M060 and B74121U0055M060 components are available up to a maximum DC voltage of 5.5 V and are suitable for the regular USB2.0 data bus of USB-C (D+ / D-). They have clamping voltages of 3.9 V and 4.0 V respectively (at ITLP of 8 A), are designed for ESD discharge voltages up to 15 kV and have a housing design and height that matches the applicable interface type.
Power supply lines VBUS (CC / SBU) can transmit up to 100 W at voltages 20 V and currents 5 A. Safe ESD protection is therefore essential. For this reason, TDK has introduced two new components, the B74121G0160M060 and the B74121G0200M060. These components have a maximum operating voltage of 16 V and 20 V respectively, clamp voltages of 23 V and 27 V (at ITLP of 8 A), capacitance values of 6 pF and 5 pF respectively, and high linearity and a nominal ESD contact discharge voltage of up to 15 kV. They are also available in a compact WLCSP 0201 form factor with a height of 150 µm.
Due to the different requirements, a total of three different types of TVS diodes are required for the complete ESD protection of the USB-C. In addition to USB-C, the new components are also widely used in ESD protection applications for other high-speed interfaces such as Thunderbolt, HDMI, DisplayPort, FireWire, DVI, S-ATA or SWP / NFC, as well as for typical end devices such as smartphones, tablets, laptops, wearables or network components.
