STMicroelectronics first used AI software to design chips, and Microsoft Cloud became the key computing power support

On February 8, STMicroelectronics, the European chip manufacturer, and Synopsys, the chip design software manufacturer, said on Tuesday that STMicroelectronics will use the artificial intelligence software running on Microsoft cloud to design chips for the first time to improve the efficiency of chip design.
Italy France Semiconductor said that there is often a need to design complex chips for customers in a short time, which will help solve the problem.
Italian Semiconductor is one of several companies that use artificial intelligence to help design chips. Chip design is mainly to transform complex circuit structures into billions of transistors made on a small piece of silicon.
Xinsi Technology, the manufacturer of AI software used by it, mentioned that since its first release in 2020, the software has been used to help design 100 different chips of Samsung Electronics, SK Hynix and other companies.
The accuracy of the position of billions of transistors on the chip will have a great impact on its final performance. Engineers use the software made by Synopsis Technology to determine the specific layout of transistors, and conduct experiments on several possible designs to find the best design.
In recent years, chips have become more and more complex, which means that finding the correct design requires more and more experiments. However, the deadline for commercial delivery has not been extended: customers still hope to steadily launch new chips year after year.
In order to ensure the completion of chip design within the deadline, the AI system will help engineers eliminate all unsuccessful experimental designs and point out those that will succeed.

This time, the AI chip design software used by Italy France Semiconductor runs on Microsoft Cloud, which is also a kind of cloud computing application.
Cloud computing can help alleviate this time crunch. Shankar Krishnamoorthy, general manager of Synopsys Design Automation Group, said that when the company's AI engine has more computing power, it will get better results faster. Cloud services like Microsoft can provide huge computing power in a short time.
Krishnamoorthy said that the calculation of chip design software needs a lot of computational power, but the computational power is always limited, and the time is also limited. How to give the best result within the specified time and limited computational power is the problem that engineers have to face.
