STMicroelectronics has released the ST54L NFC controller and security unit in one chip. With this chip in place, mobile devices such as smartphones, smart wearables and tablets can access secure contactless ticketing and payment services via the STPay-Mobile platform.
The ST54L can host a wide range of services, including NFC applications such as mobile payments, mobile transit cards, digital car keys, and converged services that require an embedded SIM card (eSIM). The chip runs the Thales Mobile Secure Operating System on an embedded secure unit, a combination developed in collaboration with STMicroelectronics and Thales and certified for security. Compared to its predecessor, the new ST54L chip enhances NFC RF performance and expands non-volatile storage capacity by more than 50 percent to 3.3MB, which not only allows the device to install more services, but also provides enough storage for users to download additional eSIM profiles to support multi-operator network activation profiles (MEPs) or security applications. applications.
The ST54L is now in volume production and integrated into Google's new Google Pixel 8 phone. The chip has been validated by several major handset platform manufacturers, ensuring smooth integration for smartphone device manufacturers. Using proprietary embedded Flash technology, ST manufactures the ST54L chip in its own fabs and has delivered it through its internal supply chain.
