Taiwan Economic Daily reported that the industry reported that TSMC is no longer seriously tight due to the consideration of the supply and demand of automotive semiconductors. In addition, most automotive chip customers can move to new plants in Japan, the United States and other places for production, and the construction of new plants in Europe has been delayed. Construction will not begin until 2025, about two years later than originally planned.
When TSMC held a legal meeting in January this year, it revealed that it was in contact with customers and partners and would evaluate the possibility of establishing a special process fab focusing on automotive technology in Europe based on customer needs and support from various governments. Regarding the reported delay in the pace of new plants in Europe, TSMC said it maintains the views of the previous legal meeting and has no updated response at this time.
Industry insiders pointed out that it was difficult to find a single product for automotive chips in the past. In addition to speeding up the production capacity scheduling of factories in Taiwan, TSMC has also locked in the automotive field with new plants in Japan, Europe and other places, but the current situation has changed. There are more abundant production capacity scheduling to produce automotive chips, which has improved the chip shortage to a certain extent and even reached a balance between supply and demand.
It was previously reported on the market that TSMC has sent a team to Germany and other places to investigate setting up factories in Europe. At one point, it was reported that it was expected to be finalized as early as this year. However, recently, major automotive chip manufacturers such as Infineon, Renesas, and Deyi have successively released news of large-scale investment and production expansion. If TSMC's European plant is delayed, to some extent, it also means that the company's senior management sees that the market demand for automotive chips is loose, and it is no longer out of stock as before, so they step on the brakes. Once TSMC's European plant is delayed, industry insiders have analyzed that its European automotive chip customers may stay at TSMC's Taiwan plant in the future, and even transfer to new plants in Japan, the United States and other places for production, which will help TSMC make use of overseas plant capacity.
According to industry analysis, if TSMC's European layout slows down, it is not a bad thing, especially the market fluctuations and changes, coupled with high inflation pressure. The cost of setting up plants in Europe is estimated to be much higher than in the United States and Japan, and it will also affect TSMC's overseas deployment. Manpower creates more tests.
