Toshiba Electronics Components and Memory Devices Inc. (" Toshiba ") today announced the launch of the first two products in the overtemperature Detection IC ThermoflaggerTM series: "TCTH021BE" with no latch when an abnormal state is detected and "TCTH022BE" with latch. They use positive temperature coefficient (PTC) thermistors to detect temperature rise inside electronic devices in simple circuit configurations. The product starts to support bulk shipment today.

In order for electronic devices to operate as specified, their semiconductors and electronic components must operate within the design parameters. Temperature is a critical parameter, especially when the internal temperature is higher than the temperature assumed at design. This can be a major issue in terms of safety and reliability, so an over-temperature monitoring solution is needed to detect any temperature rise.
The new ThermoflaggerTM ICs are used in combination with PTC thermistors to monitor by changing the resistance value according to the temperature. They detect the change in resistance value of a PTC thermistor placed near a heat source and output a FLAG signal to indicate overtemperature. Connecting PTC thermistors in series enables overtemperature detection at multiple locations.
The new IC is available in a small standard SOT-553 package (Toshiba's package name: ESV) with a low current consumption of 11.3 μA (typical).
The reference design "Application Circuit for Thermoflagger™, an over-temperature detection IC" using the new IC is now available.
The ThermoflaggerTM IC allows users to easily configure an over-temperature detection system for the entire electronic product, and helps achieve both size and power consumption improvements. Toshiba will continue to develop ThermoflaggerTM ICs with various functions.
