Samsung, SK Speed up AI Semiconductor Development in Response to ChatGPT

        Samsung Electronics has recently developed the industry's first 128GB CXL D-RAM with Compute Express Link (CXL) 2.0 support, according to news reports.
 
 
        CXL is a next-generation interface that makes more efficient use of accelerators, D-RAM and storage devices used in conjunction with the central processing unit or CPU in high-performance server systems. It features multiple interfaces integrated into a single interface, enabling direct communication and memory sharing between devices.
        This new product is the first in the industry to support memory pooling. This technology allows server platforms to group multiple blocks of CXL memory into a single pool, with multiple hosts sharing the memory in each pool as required. This allows the full capacity of CXL memory to be utilised, with no free areas, resulting in more efficient memory usage.
        Despite the explosion of data in recent years in metaverse, artificial intelligence (AI) and big data services, the existing DDR interface has limits on the amount of DRAM that can be installed in a system, so the continued demand for next-generation memory solutions such as CXL DRAM can compensate for this.
        Samsung Electronics developed the world's first CXL DRAM based on CXL 1.1 in May last year, followed by the successful development of a 128GB D-RAM supporting CXL 2.0 within a year's time.
        SK Hynix also developed a CXL memory sample in August last year and in October of the same year unveiled its computational memory solution platform, which is capable of integrating machine learning and computational functions into the sample.
