TSMC VS Samsung, a giant 3nm chip competition

        In the past two years, the world has encountered a huge chip crisis. Even if the major chip foundries have filled up the production capacity of all production lines, it is difficult to meet the market demand. As a result, the price of chips has soared and skyrocketed dozens of times.
        TSMC and Samsung, as the world's top two chip foundries, have made a lot of money in the past two years. Even if TSMC continues to increase chip foundry prices, orders are still soft. Especially in the second half of the year, the mass production of the 3nm process is likely to bring huge revenue growth to TSMC. 
        Recently, Taiwan's "Business Times" reported that after TSMC's 3nm process has completed technology research and development and trial production, the number of film productions will begin to increase in the second half of the third quarter, and the monthly film production in the fourth quarter will reach the level of more than 1,000 pieces. , into the mass production stage. Judging from the current situation, the initial yield of the 3nm process is better than that of the previous 5nm process, and it will be able to stabilize mass production next year and begin to contribute to revenue. As the largest customer of TSMC, Apple will be the first to try new processes. It is rumored that the M2 Pro will be built based on the 3nm process.
        On September 1, Samsung Electronics told the Economic Observer that it expects to achieve mass production in 2024, and the plan is currently proceeding as usual.
        3nm is a process of the current chip, which refers to the distance between the source and drain (commonly referred to as the positive and negative electrodes of the circuit) of a transistor in the chip. In an advanced process chip, there are usually hundreds of millions of transistors and the arrangement is complex. The more advanced the process is, the smaller the chip, the denser the transistors, and the stronger the performance of the chip. 
        TSMC monopolizes more than 75% of the world's wafer foundry advanced process market. In the advanced process, customers cannot find a substitute for TSMC, which also gives TSMC stronger bargaining power. Now on 3nm, Samsung Electronics is the most powerful. Companies that want to make TSMC e-sports products give customers a second choice. The South Korean government behind Samsung Electronics is giving more financial and technical support to the semiconductor manufacturing industry.
        In addition to the above two giants, Intel also plans to return to the 3nm battlefield. Intel said in April this year that Intel3 (about 7nm) will be mass-produced in the second half of 2023. After the company's new CEO Kissinger took office, he launched the IDM2.0 program to try to return to the semiconductor foundry business. 
        TSMC called 3nm a huge and long-lasting node in its earnings call.
