Recently, Vishay Intertechnology, Inc. (NYSE stock code: VSH) announced the introduction of a new 6 A, 20 A and 25 A microBRICK ® synchronous step-down regulator --- SiC967, SiC931 and SiC951, used to improve the power density and efficiency of the point-of-load (POL) converter. The Vishay Siliconix SiC967, SiC931 and SiC951 are available in a 10.6 mm x 6.5 mm x 3 mm package with a smaller footprint and height than such devices in the market, with an input voltage range of 4.5 V to 60 V. The SiC967, SiC931 and SiC951 are available in a 10.6 mm x 6.5 mm x 3 mm package with a smaller footprint and height than such devices in the market.
The recently announced regulator modules are 69 percent smaller than other solutions, each integrating two high-performance MOSFETs, an inductor, a controller, and minimal external components for configuration and loop compensation. The miniaturization of the device significantly increases power density, while the high degree of integration reduces design complexity and speeds time to market. The regulators' controllers have low static power consumption and peak efficiencies of up to 97%. microBRICK regulators are suitable for data centers, communications infrastructure, and industrial applications, and help reduce energy consumption by efficiently powering FPGA, ASIC, and SoC core supplies.

The regulators are highly configurable with a wide range of input voltages and adjustable output voltages down to 0.3 V. In addition, the SiC931 has four programmable switching frequencies of 600 kHz, 1 MHz, 1.5 MHz and 2 MHz, while the SiC967 and SiC951 have adjustable switching frequencies from 100 kHz to 2 MHz and 300 kHz to 1.5 MHz, respectively. All three devices have adjustable current limits, the SiC931 has adjustable soft-start, and the PMBus 1.3-compliant SiC951 supports continuous, tracking, and simultaneous modes of operation.
The voltage regulator modules provide general-purpose solutions for a wide range of applications, including server POL converters, cloud computing, high-performance computing, desktops, industrial automation, motor drives and power tools, monitoring and control systems, consumer electronics, and 5G communication devices. For these applications, the SiC951 and SiC967 offer three modes of operation: forced continuous, ultrasonic, and power saving. The SiC931 offers forced continuous operation and energy-saving modes. In energy-saving mode, the control line turns off the low-side MOSFET when the inductor current passes zero, deploying diode emulation mode. The switching frequency decreases proportionally with load conditions. There is no lower limit to the switching frequency, allowing very high efficiencies possible under light load conditions.
The device's constant on-time (COT) architecture has an ultra-fast transient response and requires only a small output capacitance to tightly regulate ripple at very light loads. Moreover, the regulator maintains loop stability regardless of the type of output capacitor used, including low ESR ceramic capacitors. The regulators incorporate a variety of reliable protection features, including output overvoltage (OVP) and undervoltage protection (UVP), cycle-by-cycle overcurrent protection (OCP), short-circuit protection (SCP) with auto-retry, over-temperature protection (OTP), and a power normal flag.
