Chip design software maker Synopsys said it will buy simulation software company Ansys in a cash-plus-stock deal of about $35 billion. The deal is designed to expand Synopsys' customer base and its suite of products.

Synopsys, headquartered in Sunnyvale, California, is one of a handful of large companies that make semiconductor design software, competing primarily with Cadence Design Systems. Meanwhile, Ansys produces simulation software used by engineers to help predict how products will work in the real world. Engineers use its structural analysis software to lower manufacturing costs, reduce risk and get products to market faster before projects begin.
Analyst Niraj Patel called the deal a "strong strategic fit" for Synopsys.
In August 2023, Synopsys completed the acquisition of PikeTec GmbH, a minority-owned German software company focused on autonomous driving, in a deal valued at $200 million. Then-CEO Aart de Geus Brisk said in an interview that the company might have sold more products to China without existing export restrictions.
Synopsys posted $5.84 billion in sales for the fiscal year ending Oct. 31, 2023, and analysts expect Synopsys' revenue to grow 13 percent in fiscal 2024.Ansys is expected to post sales of $2.26 billion in 2023, and analysts expect Ansys to grow 10 percent this year.
