Amazon will Launch High-performance Computing Chips to Challenge Intel and Nvidia

        AWS, the cloud computing arm of Amazon, is rolling out new chips designed to power high-performance computing, supporting tasks such as weather forecasting and genetic sequencing. AWS' homegrown chips will pose a challenge to partners such as Intel and Nvidia.
        AWS said Monday that it will allow customers to rent computing power that relies on its new version of the Graviton chip. Peter DeSantis, senior vice president in charge of much of AWS' engineering team, said the product is a springboard to make so-called high-performance computing more accessible to the industry.
        Amazon said producing its own chips will provide customers with more cost-effective computing power than renting processors made by Intel, Nvidia or AMD. DeSantis said these chip makers remain "great partners" and AWS plans to continue to offer high-performance computing services based on chips made by other companies.
        AWS is said to have acquired chipmaker Annapurna Labs in 2015 to launch its own chip designs. Those designs initially focused on simpler computing tasks.
        DeSantis said the new chip, Graviton3E, has twice the capacity of some high-performance computing than the existing Graviton family of chips. When combined with other AWS technologies, the new chip's performance will be 20 percent higher than previous offerings. Amazon did not disclose when services based on the new chip would be available.
