On Wednesday (Nov. 16), U.S. chip design firm Advanced Micro Devices said Aisin, a major Japanese automotive supplier, has chosen AMD's microprocessors to power a new system that can help automate car parking.

"Today, these parking systems have a strong foothold in the very luxurious automotive market. Aisin's solution is designed to make it mainstream because the solution itself is designed to fit into a very cost-effective module," Wayne Lyons, AMD's senior director of automotive marketing, told Reuters.
The chip, known as the Zynq UltraScale+ MPSoC, was developed by Xilinx, which was acquired by AMD this year. xilinx specializes in a chip called an fpga, or field-programmable gate array. Their circuitry can be reconfigured after the chips are installed in devices such as cars, Rehan Tahir, AMD's senior product marketing manager for automotive, told Reuters, adding that this will allow automakers to update not only the software but also the chips after the cars are sold.
Tahir said Aisin's parking system will start production on 2024 models, but declined to say which car brands will use the system.
Aisin is a member of the Toyota group of companies. introduced one of the first parking assistance systems in Japan at the beginning of the 21st century. The system, which guides vehicles into parking spaces, was introduced in the U.S. in 2006 on the top Lexus LS sedan and is now widely used on various Toyota and Lexus models, including the Prius.
Tahir said the Aisin system works with four cameras and 12 ultrasonic sensors in the car to parallel park and also return to a parking space. But the person in the car must decide if the spot is a no-parking zone, he said.
