Apple M3 chip exposure: TSMC 3nm process debut iMac

Recently, according to Mark Gurman's latest revelations, Apple will skip the M2 chip and equip the next generation 24-inch iMac with a new M3 chip, so the new iMac will not be launched until the end of this year at the earliest.

The news broke that the Apple M3 chip uses the latest TSMC 3nm technology. This chip will not only be applied to the iMac, but also the MacBook Air, which will debut in the second half of this year, and future 13-inch MacBook Pro and Macmini products will also use the M3 chip.
It is reported that the TSMC 3nm process used in the Apple M3 is the most advanced chip process at present. Compared to the 5nm (N5) process, TSMC's 3nm logic density gain at the same speed is increased by 60%, power consumption is reduced by 30-35%, and the innovative TSMC FINFLEX architecture is supported.
If Apple wants to use TSMC's 3nm process, it will have to pay a higher price. That is, the foundry price is as high as 20,000 US dollars, which is more than 25% higher than the 5nm price. Such a high foundry price is expected to be acceptable only to Apple. In creating a product experience, Apple has always spared no effort and will always choose "better" technology. But based on its product and brand capabilities, Apple is good at translating "better" technology into real price increases. I believe that many people will still pay for the iMac with the M3 chip.
It is reported that Apple last updated the iMac in April 2021, with the M1 chip and a new ultra-thin and colorful design. Since the 27-inch iMac and iMacPro based on Intel processors have been discontinued in the past two years, this iMac is also the only product currently on sale.
In addition, it is also worth noting that the A17 processor that Apple will launch this year will usher in a greater improvement in performance. According to Guo Mingyu, an analyst at Tianfeng International Securities, in order to ensure that the world's most advanced 3nm processor can enter mass production smoothly from 2023 to 2025, Apple is investing most of its IC design resources in the research and development of new processors. Therefore, by 2023, many Apple products will use TSMC's 3nm chip process.
