Apple's self-developed M2 Max chip: performance improvement is worrying

In June of this year, Apple released the MacBook Pro and MacBook Air with the M2 chip at WWDC2022. Since then, there have been rumors that Apple is preparing a big killer. Recently, the M2 Max has appeared on the benchmark platform, but its performance has been somewhat powerless.

According to GeekBench, the M2 Max has 12 cores, a main frequency of up to 3.54GHz, and 96GB of memory. By contrast, the previous generation M1 Max had only 10 CPU cores and 32 GPU cores, and supported 64GB of memory at the same time. This also means that the GPU core of the M2 Max may be more. After all, the M2 has a lot of upgrades compared to the M1.
In terms of running points, Apple M2 Max core solo score has reached 1889 points, multi-core 14586 points, M1 Max core solo score can reach 1700-1800 points, and multi-core score can reach 12800 points. This seems to indicate that the M2 Max has a limited improvement in core solo performance compared to the M1 Max, which is not as big as imagined.
From the performance improvement of the M2, it may be possible to get a glimpse of the performance improvement of the M2 Max. The M2 adopts two specifications, the 8-core GPU version and the 10-core GPU version.
Compared to the 8-core GPU of the M1, the performance of the 8-core version of the M2 is improved by 10%, and the 10-core version is improved by 35%. The overall energy consumption of M2 is not improved compared to M1. It is also composed of the same 4 high-performance cores and 4 high-energy cores, but M2 performance has increased by 18% year over year.
Earlier, Apple CEO Tim Cook recently visited the Apple Austin campus and showed everyone the product Apple's Austin engineering team is working hard to develop – Apple's next-generation Apple Silicon. At the time, it was impossible to confirm whether the new generation of chips was called the M2 Ultra/Extreme or the rumored M3, but with the advent of the M2 Max, it is very likely that it is a chip from the M2 series. The new high-end Mac Pro will offer at least twice or four times the chip version of the M2 Max, and call these chips "M2 Ultra" and "M2 Extreme." Mac Pro will be available in versions with 24 and 48 CPU cores and 76 and 152 GPU cores, with up to 256 GB of memory.
Combining this information, the M2 Max has also received an upgrade in memory support, and another argument says that the M2 Max will use a 38-core GPU, and Apple is more inclined to provide a sufficient number of cores to ensure the performance of the M2 Max. Even if the current benchmark platform shows that the performance upgrade of the M2 Max is limited, everything is still unknown before the official release.
