SoftBank Group chip design company Arm has added former Qualcomm CEO Paul Jacobs and former Intel executive Rose Schooler to its board of directors in preparation for its upcoming initial public offering (IPO).

Arm's other directors include SoftBank CEO Masayoshi Son and iPhone pioneer Tony Fadell, who will help Arm prepare for the IPO by providing experience in developing corporate strategies at public companies, the company said in a statement released Wednesday.
Sculer left to head sales for Intel's server chip division, which still dominates this lucrative computing sector. Jacobs, meanwhile, led Qualcomm for nearly a decade. During that time, the company became the largest supplier of smartphone processors.
The $580 billion chip industry is now at a fragile point, during which SoftBank hopes to complete its Arm IPO. Arm is also in a legal battle with Jacobs' old boss, Qualcomm, over technology licensing.
Arm's technology and chip designs are almost ubiquitous in modern electronics, especially in mobile phones. Its customer list includes Apple, Amazon and many of the world's other major technology companies, and Arm CEO Rene Haas is tasked with, among other things, extending that reach into the emerging areas needed for computers and self-driving cars.
In an interview, Jacobs declined to comment on Arm's legal dispute with Qualcomm, but said: "Becoming a public company will bring more scrutiny and more attention to Arm, but it will also push it to sharpen its long sword. The key for me is the position Arm is in, with its broad customer base."
Schuyler has worked at Intel for more than 30 years and until recently acted as an adversary to Arm. Much of her work was spent convincing customers not to use Arm's chip technology. But now she's looking forward to helping Arm enter new markets, just as she did early in her career at Intel.
I've been in charge of offensive strategy at semiconductor companies for most of my life, and it feels really good to be in that role again," Skuler said in an interview. My role is not to be an operational leader, but to be a strategic advisor to a company that has tremendous growth opportunities."
